A vague brief is an expensive way to discover what you wanted. Before hiring someone, describe the finished work, the constraints and how you will judge success. This helps both you and the freelancer decide whether the project is a good match.
Describe the finished work
State what you need delivered, who it is for, and where it will be used. ‘A logo’ becomes more actionable when you add the business name, audience, existing colors, intended sizes and required file formats.
Separate the essentials from preferences. Include reference examples and explain what you like about each one. Make clear whether you need an original concept, production of an existing idea, or a revision of something already made.
Compare evidence that resembles your project
Look for work with a similar purpose and level of complexity. A beautiful illustration does not automatically establish experience designing a readable interface, and a polished short video does not tell you how someone handles a long technical script.
On a marketplace such as Fiverr, read the specific package rather than judging only the seller’s headline or starting price. Review the included deliverables, timing and revision scope. Ask about anything your project needs that is not explicitly included.
Put the agreement into clear terms
| Agree on | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Deliverables and file types | You can use and edit the final work |
| Deadline and milestones | Both sides know when feedback is due |
| Revisions | Changes have a defined scope |
| Usage rights | You understand how the work may be used |
Keep project communication and payments within the platform’s supported process. Read its current terms for your order; do not assume ownership, confidentiality or a particular revision entitlement without checking.
Start with a bounded assignment
For a larger project, begin with a small paid milestone that still produces something useful. This tests communication and fit before either side commits to the whole job. Avoid requesting unpaid custom samples.
Give feedback against the brief. Explain which requirement is not met and provide a concrete example. ‘Make it better’ offers little direction; ‘the title needs to remain readable at mobile size’ gives the freelancer a problem they can solve.
